Choices for assignment

Digital Darkroom, i have chosen this category as i have always loved using  photoshop and loved pushing myself to the limits with how i can edit and manipulate photographs i take, so i instantly jumped at this category.

Portrait, i have always liked working with people when taking photographs, the photo i want to take i want to capture my subjects personality, this i feel i need to put alot of preperation into my photograph.

Seaside, i have rarely captured images of the sea so this is something i would like to try and test my skills

Candid, i have always felt uncomfortable taking candid shots, so i have always wanted to take more candid shots.

Self-initiated, i am chosing this category purely due to the fact that i have more time to take this shot.

Abstract

An example...

An example of how i take photographs and then how i edit them in photoshop.

With this photo i made sure i had the right composition and lighting, and the rest i left to photoshop. I also made sure that on the shoot i took some better lower exposure shots of the sky, to really pull out the strong blues and whites in the sky, if i had tried to do this whilst taking the photo of the building i would have pulled the exposure in the building down too low to get an eye catching image. In photoshop i merged the images together and fiddled with some levels.

Experimental Processes- Pinhole Photography

This process really excites me as it is the very raw form of photography but you can get great effects out of it. I took an additional A Level a few years ago in photography. There i was able to play about with pinhole photography. A very basic form of it was to get a piece of light sensitive paper in a dark room and put it in a shoe box. The shoe box had a hole at one end of it no bigger than a pin. You would point the shoe box at your subject, whatever youw ould choose and turn the light on for a bit. When you looked back at the paper you would get a very faint image on the photographic paper with absolutely no camera equipment at all. To me this is very experimental.

Experimental Processes- HDR

HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography has always interested me and is something that i like to play about with from time to time. You can use HDR in a number of ways. The first is using Brackets on a DSLR. This takes your photo 3 times, 1 in an over exposed image, 1 under exposed and one with the correct exposure. When put together in photoshop you can play about with the images and get some great contrasts and colours. Another way is through photoshop on a single exposure image. In a sense, this is fake HDR as it is just manipulating an image to give the HDR effect. This plays about with contrasts into shot, with different elements like fill light and and saturations in the image. You can still get really nice shots like this. Myself, i like to think of as not so much of a photographer, but more of an editor. I like to take snaps, only thinking about the lighting and exposure of a shot, giving me a broad spectrum of light to play with in photoshop in post production. This process is very experimental as it can almost make a photo look fake at times, which can look really good, and at othertimes i can really make an image stand out of the page. This photo below is taken at southsea beaches, i used a longer exposure and played about with the image in photoshop to give a slight HDR effect.

Photographer Research- Andrew B. Myers

Andrew B. Myers style of work is very artistic. When looking at his work i would like to think there is a certain amount of posted editing in the images, but can also believe that no editing is involved. His shots are simple but creative. They also have a certain comic book feel about them.

Andrew B. Myers's work really inspires me as i like to create abstract work in photoshop using different vibrant colours.

Andrew B. Myers has his own website and is listed on a number of photography websites.

Photographer Research- Chen Jiagang

I really like Chen Jiagang's work for a number of reasons. The first is the use of composition in her shots. The subjects in Chen Jiagang's photos are usually small, but have a massive back drop to them. I like this because it makes the viewer think about the photo and what its story or reason is. I also like the fact that Chen Jiagang has a human subject in all her images, but also have a landscape feel to each image. Chen Jiagang's work still makes me think and thats what i like about the work.

Chen Jiagang's work really inspires me. When i take photos i really like to keep the viewer thinking as much as possible about what the photo is saying, keeping its true meaning to myself. I feel it gives my photos a mild form of mystery about them.

Chen Jiagang has his own website and is listed on a number of photography sites.

Photographer Research- Thomas Locke Hobbs

When i look at work like the work Hobbs has done, i find that i dont know what i am supposed to be admiring about the image. In my opinion there has been no photographic knowledge or techniques involved when Hobbs has taken his photos. I also dislike the subjects in the photos. Again, it seems that no thought has gone into the subjects, they are just snaps of random spaces in my opinion. But i may be completely mis judging the art of Hobbs's photography.

Hobb's work does not inspire me. I like work to be creative and quirky, so Hobbs's work to me is dull and not artistic in any way.

Hobbs has his own website and is listed on a number of photography websites.
